Paris – Le Royal Monceau Raffles

Paris - Le Royal Monceau Raffles

The latest hotel to benefit from a Philippe Starck makeover is this 149-room, Art Deco gem close to the Arc de Triomphe. A grand hotel since the 1920s, Le Royal Monceau Raffles has rediscovered its former élan with enormous island beds, red lanterns, mirrored walls and lots of contemporary art. The glamorous facilities include the city’s largest hotel pool, the new Spa My Blend by Clarins and Le Bar Long. Dining is at gourmet Italian Il Carpaccio or Gallic La Cuisine, where desserts are created by the ‘Picasso of pastry’ Pierre Hermé.

X-factor ‘Philippe Starck’s quirky take on Art Deco involves leather and linen, steel and chrome on curvaceous furniture,’ says Gold List contributor Nonie Niesewand. ‘He can’t resist a joke, so there is a herd of carved wooden moose under the first-floor landing; and his extra-outsize chandeliers, capped with little shades, fall from the ceilings like a high-wire act.’
