New Zealand – Blanket Bay

New Zealand - Blanket Bay

Known for its Pacific Rim cuisine and its awe-inspiring setting, this lodge lies on the shores of South Island’s Lake Wakatipu, backed by snow-capped mountains, prehistoric rainforest and small, trout-filled lakes. Owned by Tom Tusher, the former CEO of Levi Strauss & Co, the hotel has just 12 bedrooms and suites in the main building and several chalets, so the atmosphere is always intimate and relaxed. Facilities include a spa, steam rooms and pool; activities include fly-fishing, riding and heli-skiing.

X-factor The hardwood beams used in the hotel are more than 100 years old, and have been recycled from old constructions – including a wharf on the Brisbane River. The use of local schist stone and timber from New Zealand wool sheds adds to the historic ambience.
