In what amounts to an impressive example of thinking way outside the box, this newfangled SeaBird from AquaVenture goes around underwater towed. That’s right–it’s towed. Via a 400 ft cable attached to a boat on the surface. Dashes your dreams of going all Captain Nemo on his Nautilus, right? If that sounds a tad bizarre, the advantage of having this for your underwater ride is it goes faster than usual. According to AquaVenture, the two-passenger SeaBird is capable of an impressive 22 knots, which translates to 40 plus mph.

The 21 foot torpedo shaped craft may be unconventional, but everything else about it hints at a hefty price tag. Not only can customers dictate the kind of seating available, but they have a variety of bells and whistles to choose from. The SeaBird, whose passengers are encased in a plexiglass shell over the ABS steel body that has buoyant and shock resistant capabilities, can steer the SeaBird via a side mounted joystick and rubber control pedals.

A single seat variant is in the works and orders for the present SeaBird are now available. Oh wait, unless you’ve got $200,000 to spare, you’re better off tooling around with a DIY submersible.
