Thunder Perfect Prada
March 26th, 2006
Fashion empress Miuccia Prada’s entree into the fragrance world takes a page from her design aesthetic - subtle and sophisticated with a bit of a twist - with ads for the coming out of Prada, the perfume, that are markedly different from the flashy affairs of couture contemporaries Gucci or Dolce & Gabbana.
Rather than take the traditional route of sexually charged commercials, Prada approached RSA’s Ridley and daughter Jordan Scott to create a short film to portray the many intricacies of women.
Entitled “Thunder Perfect Mind”, the poem, which was discovered in Egypt in 1945, deals with the many aspects of the female psyche. It also became the basis for the film. The film stars model Daria Werbowy as various female archetypes - the wife, the mistress, the virgin, the mother, the daughter - who pass each other in each scene. Set to a smooth jazzy score and narrated only with the text of the poem, the film has a very moody and ethereal feel.
While the film was co-directed by both Ridley and Jordan, the younger Scott led the project while the elder was more of a sounding board. “I was more hands-on and he supported me,” says Jordan. “It was great working with him and it worked out perfectly.” The two also collaborated on a separate short film.
