BenQ LCD Monitor Crazy Arm

This is the first award winner that I would just love to own. I mean, not only is it visually striking and pleasing, but you can’t possibly get more functional than that. Seven USB ports and a bunch of other accessory slots make for one powerful workhorse. And hell, you won’t be able to take your eyes off it. I mean, just look at it over there, it looks like a giant squid is attacking your workplace. And if giant cephalpods don’t spell productivity, then I don’t know what does. I’m sure Joel Spolsky will buy one of these for each of his employees soon enough, because their workspace just isn’t cushy enough already. Don’t think that’s a slight, I actually agree with him about spoiling your employees, it’s the only way to recruit (and keep) the best around.

Avid Mojo

Avid MojoThe Avid Mojo is a high-performance real-time video editing tool that provides cutting-edge technology and convenience. Since the Mojo is a key tool for filmmakers and video editors, a product always in sight and used all the time, it needed to be small, smooth and lightweight. Its shape fits the hand well and is slim enough to fit in a briefcase next to a laptop. While subtle, its design is also intended to specifically appeal to the gear lust of the typical video editor as well as add a professional cachet to even a moderately-priced editing suite. The anodized metal housing nicely complements laptop and other tabletop peripherals used by video editors. In addition to numerous positive reviews, sales have exceeded expectations, more than tripling original forecasts.

bUNIT

The bUNIT is a personal authentication device that allows customers to access proprietary Bloomberg services and ensures their data is protected from unauthorized access. The design manages to combine a fingerprint scanner, status screen, photo sensor and series of microchips into an ultra compact credit-card-sized package. The design is its own instruction of use, guiding a user through the authentication process via physical and onscreen cues. The aesthetic appeal of the bUNIT makes the process into something special, reserved for an exclusive, members-only community. It also deflects the sometimes negative perceptions associated with the authentication procedure and communicates to the user Bloomberg’s commitment to security and subscriber privileges, further enhancing their brand image and appreciation by their clients.

Decru DataFort

The Decru DataFort is a system of rack-mounted network security appliances that protect an organization’s most valuable asset its information. The design team created a visual brand for Decru that would engender feelings of strength, security and reliability in users. Its heavy block grid gives a fortified, trustworthy appearance that assures the highly confidential and proprietary information inside is protected. Confidence in the machine’s power is bolstered by the venting pattern and curved protruded LCD interaction module. In order to differentiate the DataFort from traditional network peripherals and servers, which are usually faced with bland sheet metal plates, designers employed a blue and black color scheme. The designers also kept tooling and manufacturing costs to a minimum, all within a four-week turnaround.

NYSE Wireless Handheld Computer

The New York Stock Exchange needed to upgrade the handheld wireless technology traders were using on the floor. Traders use these terminals intermittently throughout the day but need to keep the device with them at all times. The innovative solution deftly balances the client’s physical requirements (large touch-screen, powerful, long battery life) with the opposing needs of the user (highly mobile, unobtrusive profile, lightweight). A secure shoulder strap allows the handheld computer to dangle comfortably against the body when not in use. A sensor automatically turns off the touch-screen when the units are upside down, saving battery life and locking the touch screen from accidental inputs. When in use the computer’s narrow profile and curved back helps it fit more comfortably in the trader’s palm. The weight was reduced from existing equipment while the screen size was left unchanged.

JBL OnStage

Harman Consumer Group
OnStage was designed to be the ultimate docking station for all iPods. It docks, charges and has a pass through connector that directly syncs to your computer. It is also a high-performance speaker system. Much research went into devising the means to generate high-performance sound from such a small device, including the placement of the radial driver as well as the interplay of the ring shape to the table, which specifically enhances the base. OnStage’s design language also complements all iPods. OnStage so far has increased JBL’s bottom line by 50 percent with a 50 percent market penetration.
