HP Improves iPAQ Offerings

HP enhanced its iPAQ Mobile Messenger line today with the new hw6900 smartphone, which adds Wi-Fi, Windows Mobile 5.0 and a faster processor to their previous hw6515 device.
hw6900-smartphoneThe hw6900 looks just like the hw6515, with its 3-inch square, 240×240 TFT screen and integrated keyboard of small, round keys. It’s a little heavier (6.33 oz vs. 5.8 oz) and more powerful. The hw6515’s 312 MHz Intel processor has been bumped up to 416 MHz. Wi-Fi joins Bluetooth 1.2 and quad-band GSM/EDGE for networking, and the operating system is now Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, which will enable push e-mail with Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2 servers.
Like the hw6515, the hw6900 will have integrated GPS. In North America, it will sell with Microsoft Pocket Streets 2006 for driving directions. The HP Photosmart camera software will also let you geo-tag photos taken with the built-in, 1.3 megapixel digital camera.
E-mail connectivity via Microsoft’s Pocket Outlook and Good Technology’s GoodLink will work over the EDGE modem at faster-than-dialup speeds and over the built-in Wi-Fi, as well.
HP says the hw6900’s phone will include a speakerphone and the battery will last for four hours of talk time, with up to seven days standby time. HP hasn’t announced a carrier for this device, but the hw6515 came out on Cingular, and it costs $399-599 depending on contract and rebates.
The hw6900 looks like a good evolutionary step for the iPAQ line. But the continued use of the 240×240 screen promises more problems with Pocket PC software designed for 320×240 screens; we’ve seen similar problems with some software on the Palm Treo 700w, which has the same square screen. We expect to get an hw6900 here at PC Magazine soon, so check back for a review.

TDS TerraGuide Navigation Package

TDS-TerraGuide-NavigationThis is not a low-cost outdoor-enthusiast product; think of it as a military-grade PDA for professionals who spend a lot of time working outdoors. GPS performance is good, though the bundled raster topographic maps are not terribly impressive on a PDA screen.
Extremely rugged. Runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PCs. Two CompactFlash slots.
Bulky. Weighs 17 ounces. Expensive. Raster maps, while very accurate, aren’t crisp at higher magnification on the handheld.
Price: $1,799.95

Modern Jeweler-Nature

Modern-Jeweler-Nature The latest gem cuts delighting jewelry designers are a little rough round the edges.
With organic, nature-inspired jewelry designs among the most important trends for 2006, the perfect example of the natural look isn’t always perfect. Rather than the pristine and polished look of traditionally cut gemstones, the latest gem cuts are a little rough around the edges. These shapes, such as “rough cut” briolettes, maintain more of the precious stones’ real face. Irregular, asymmetrical, and “tumbled” cuts add the natural look to high-end jewelry designs. Even precious metals are being molded into naturalistic forms like nuggets, sometimes also combined with naturally shaped baroque pearls. In the extreme, diamonds and gemstones are used in their unadorned natural crystal forms. It’s truly the ultimate in back-to-nature luxury.
